  • Once every 2 years if you have any eyesight problem.
  • Once a year if you are diabetic or hypertensive.

Dental Exam

Whole abdomen Ultrasound scan

  • Once a year Ultrasound scan of the whole abdomen (in fasting state and with full urine bladder) is recommended to look for some silent common conditions like gall bladder stones to complex tumors.

  • Since ultrasound scan has no harmful radiations, one can get the scans even before one year, if need be.

1) General check up with blood pressure and body weight monitoring.
2) ECG
3) Chest X ray (PA view)
4) Ultrasound whole abdomen (with TVS- Transvaginal scan, when applicable)
5) Ultrasound Breast
6) Pap Smear
7) Blood and urine tests

i. CBC- complete blood counts
ii. FBS- fasting blood sugar
iii. HbAIc – Glycated hemoglobin
iv. KFT- kidney function tests
v. Complete Lipid Profile
vi. LFT- liver function tests
vii. Serum TSH (thyroid)
viii. Serum Uric Acid

  • According to the US medical guidelines, beginning at the age of 21, women should have a pelvic exam and pap smear every 3 years to check for cervical cancer.
  • If your are above 30 years of age, and your pap smear/HPV screening test is normal, then you need a pap smear every 5 years

Blood and urine tests

  • Once a year, complete blood tests including thyroid, liver, kidney function tests, vitamin D, Vitamin B12 must be done.

Some of the essentials for screenings for women aged 40 to 60 years

Blood pressure, Sugar, Fat are the silent factors which if deranged can cause major problems.

Blood Pressure

  • Every 6 months. Blood pressure has two components- systolic (upper value) and diastolic (lower value). Normal should be 120-130 systolic / 80-89 diastolic units.

Cholesterol screening

  • Every year if your initial readings are normal. However, if there is high cholesterol, then once every 6 months along with the treatment if needed.

Diabetes screening

  • Every year if your initial readings are normal. However, if there is high fasting or random blood sugar, then once every 6 months along with the treatment if needed.
  • If your fasting and random blood sugar values are coming high, then one must get HBAIC blood test to check for the average blood sugar over last 3 months.

Heart (Cardiac) Screening

  • Total lipid profile - the amount of cholesterol carried in the blood is called (LDL) low-density lipoproteins which can build up in the arteries and(HDL) High-density lipoproteins which absorb cholesterol and carry it back to the liver where it is removed from the body.
  • Blood glucose levels.
  • Blood levels of high sensitivity C reactive protein(hsCRP). It is high if there is swelling or inflammation in the body.
  • Blood Homocysteine levels.
  • Blood pressure levels (average of at least three readings).
  • ECG - Electrocardiography. Depending on the results of these initial tests, your doctor may recommend –
    1) Echocardiography – ultrasound of the heart
    2) Cardiac stress echo scan
    3) Cardiac CT scan for calcium scoring
    4) Coronary CT scan- angiography

Colorectal cancer screening

  • FOBT – Fecal occult blood test which is a stool test to be done once a year
  • Flexible sigmoidoscopy every 5 years
  • CT colonoscopy every 5 years

  • If there is a lump, either FNAC which is needle aspiration or a core biopsy which is a sample of solid tissue is taken under ultrasound guidance by the interventional radiologist.

Pelvic exam and Pap smear

  • Once a year ultrasound of the pelvis with a transvaginal scan to look for ovaries, uterus, etc is recommended.
